Casual is King in this Coosaw Creek Home
By Carole Trottere
Carolyn and Taylor Meeks make a living finding the perfect houses for other people. Their real estate business in Summerville, South Carolina is billed as the Charleston area’s number one realtor, and Taylor has been involved in over 1,800 real estate transactions during his 12 years as a real estate agent. Carolyn joined forces with her husband eight years ago and now serves as the marketing director.
When the busy working couple decided to find themselves a new place to call home, they purchased a four-year-old, 3,042-square-foot brick home in the Coosaw Creek community, with an expansive backyard view of the 14th fairway.
“Coosaw Creek is a convenient location and it offers lots of great amenities, including a wonderful chef at the Country Club,” says Carolyn.
The unpretentious and spacious home reflects the personalities of its owners, who prize comfort above all else.
“We have a dog that sits on the furniture,” Taylor says.
“We like to entertain our friends on the weekends,” says Carolyn, “and have guests over for dinner. When you walk through the door of this house, you see a home that is beautiful, yet comfortable enough to enjoy.”
The layout of their new home suited the Meeks’s fine, but the interior design needed some updating. For this project the Meeks called local interior designer Kevin Patrick, owner of Piazza, one of Carolyn’s favorite home design and accessory shops in town.
“Kevin is not only the most talented designer, he’s also the easiest to work with,” says Carolyn, who has used Kevin’s design talents in the past.
“I already knew the Meeks’,” says Kevin, “and I knew they wanted something comfortable, not a sit-in showhouse. Whatever we did had to be useful.”
Kevin began his them of “casual elegance” throughout the house by first giving the interior a whole new, fresh look. Much of the wall covering that had been used throughout the house was removed and the living room and foyer walls were coated in a creamy shade called “chamois.” Plantation shutters were installed on all the windows throughout the home, giving all the rooms a very spacious and airy look.
Much of the Meeks’ furniture was utilized, with additional accent pieces added. Kevin worked in a palette of sage green, chestnut, coral and multicolored tapestries for pillows and upholstered chairs, picking up these shades in the oriental rugs that grace the hardwood floors.
The rooms are all accented by several preserved floral arrangements, a specialty of Piazza.
“This whole house is a livable house,” says Taylor.
